Nitric Oxide a Possible Treatment for COVID-19, Researchers Find

Researchers at the University of Uppsala in Sweden have found that nitric oxide (NO), which was successfully used to treat patients who contracted the first SARS-virus in 2003, also appears effective in treating SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19.

Having an effective treatment is significant because while a vaccine is intended to prevent a person from becoming sick with a specific disease in the first place, it does not help to treat a person who is currently sick.

Several States Are Almost at Herd Immunity

Cumulatively and slowly, the U.S. is seeing more states reach that combined level of vaccinations and infections approach what is seen as herd immunity. So far, South Dakota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah, and Tennessee are the nearest.

The consistent and rapid decline in daily cases since January 8 can likely only be explained by natural immunity, given that Americans traveled more over Christmas than they did since March. Vaccines also don’t explain the steep decline in January. Vaccination rates were low and their effect takes weeks to kick in.

However, whether the majority of the herd immunity is due to vaccination or infection and recovery, the fact that an increasingly smaller percentage of the population remains vulnerable to Sars-CoV2 is encouraging and indicates that social distancing and masks make less and less sense.

However, so far the new U.S. President is frustrating Bejing’s hopes to have a much easier time with the Biden administration than with its hardline predecessor.
