#FreeTN is planning a rally to reopen Tennessee for this Sunday from 2 to 4pm in front of the historic courthouse and city hall in Nashville.

Despite the WHO now publicly admitting that Coronavirus spread via asymptomatic people is “very rare”, which means there is no more reason to insist on physical distancing, and despite the fact that “flattening the curve” has successfully been accomplished two months ago, some restrictions are still in place in Tennessee. This stands in contrast to governor Bill Lee’s original promise that his initial executive order would expire on April 14th, i.e. almost two months ago (it was later extended, contrary to his word, and then followed up with additional orders that created new restrictions and kept many others in place) .

In the capital, Nashville, the situation is even more absurd, as mayor John Cooper called on Nashvilians to attend a protest with thousands of people (which ended with the courthouse and city hall being set on fire and downtown buildings being looted and vandalized), but still refuses to lift restrictions for businesses and churches.

As this is obviously no longer about health, as the mayor’s call to attend a mass protest proves, Tennesseans are now demanding to end the remaining restrictions.

While we hear a lot about incidents of police misconduct, especially if it is outrageous, we rarely hear the other side.

Misconduct happens, is a problem, especially due to the power imbalance, and needs to be addressed.

But the police are also whom we turn to when we become a victim of a crime. The vast majority of doctors want to help their patients, even if they sometimes make a mistake, and even if a few doctors behave rude and inappropriately to their patients at times and even abuse their power. Most are idealists who have made their desire to help people their profession. Likewise, most police officers want to serve their communities and keep society safe. Unlike doctors, they receive a lot of hostility for it, though.

With all the understandable outrage at the moment, it may be a good approach to strenghthen ties between police and communities. E.g. by having school excursions to police departments, aving neighbors meetings with police officers from the local precinct, returning authority over the police to the elected sheriff, where it has been taken away and given to unelected police commissioners, etc.

The more people (and police officers are people, too) know each other personally, the less anonymous “the police” become and the more mutual understanding there will be.

Contrary to what experts feared for the last several months, it is apparently very rare for a person without symptoms to spread the Wuhan-Coronavirus, also known as Covid-19, according to the World Health Organization.

This finding marks a stark deviation from previous concerns and has serious implications for policy, as it was the very reason for measures such as “social distancing” (which should really be called physical distancing anyway).

Racism does exist, and is wrong. No doubt. But accusing everyone of racism, regardless of their actual beliefs and actions is, too. Moreover, it creates irreconcilable camps, as it renders any effort of an individual to improve insufficient. This is a recipe for intentional division, not for justice, equality or peaceful unity.

The director of the Norwegian public health agency, Camilla Stoltenberg, has the guts and integrity to admit what most other leaders don’t have the persona to concede: “We made a mistake.”

Her agency published a report with a striking conclusion: the Wuhan-coronavirus never spreaded as fast as had been feared, and when the lockdowns were ordered, the virus was already retreating naturally.

While most government officials still cling to outdated models and data from months ago, or point to artificially inflated numbers (as many countries, including the U.S. count every person who dies with Covid or even just Covid-like symptoms, as a Covid-death, not just people who died of Covid), Norway is doing the right thing and coming clean with its citizens.

This is important, because for one thing, there is no point in keeping restrictions on place that are not needed. For another, should another epidemic come along at some point (there are several different flu strains going around every winter, for example), it is important not to repeat mistakes that have ruined millions of businesses and are projected to cause over 100 Million people to starve to death this year, according to the UN (more than ten times as many as without the shutdowns).

Every mayor, governor, prime minister or president should learn a lesson from Ms. Stoltenberg.

The riots have seen the two major parties in the U.S. fall squarely into two camps: one that wants to end the riots, ban Antifa and which supports the people’s right to protect themselves, and one that supports the riots, calls on people to join them, opposes banning Antifa, wants to ban individuals’ rights to defend themselves and is hesitant to curtail the riots. Whichever one supports: there is a party supporting your position. And November is only five months away.

First signs of recovery are already visible. How quick and complete it will be, remains to be seen, as many businesses did not survive the draconian shutdown measures and will never again create jobs. But among the ones who did, many are now in need for workers again, as they are allowed to open up again.

The numbers also vary depending on jurisdiction, as some cities and states chose to keep restrictions in place, thus preventing a complete return to a normal economy, while others allowed more freedom throughout the crisis. But overall, the numbers are encouraging.
