“Maybe your purpose on this planet isn’t on this planet.” Proving it is taking national security seriously, President Trump’s administration is taking concrete steps to protect and defend vital U.S. assets in space.
The primary purpose of the U.S. military’s newest branch is not to put American soldiers into space, but to ensure that our technology in space, such as satellites, is safe from foreign threats. Few Americans are aware how much our daily lives have become dependent upon reliable infrastructure in orbit.
From GPS, to internet connections, TV and phone signals etc., a disruption of our satellites would wreak havoc on our daily lives. Adversarial powers such as China, have already proven their capability to destroy satellites.
Our current military is not adequately geared toward effective defense of our space infrastructure and the U.S. Air Force has other priorities. President Trump’s decision to create a new military branch was therefore a wise one, just as the creation of the U.S. Air Force, which was initially formed as a branch of the U.S. Army, had become necessary by 1947.
