Alternative media with conservative leanings were the first to be deplatformed from major big tech companies’ services such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and iTunes. Libertarians and even apolitical individuals such as doctors and scientists who dared to contradict whichever narrative Big Tech supported, were next on the chopping block.
Commentators on the left cheered this trend and called for more censorship, which led to millions of accounts being suspended, apps with millions of users being banned and even the President of the United States being silenced.
However, totalitarian movements never treat their own supporters kindly for long. Increasingly, even left-leaning individuals now get a taste of the medicine they recently prescribed everyone else. This is finally leading some to rediscover the value of freedom of speech.
Case in point: the progressive journalist Jordan Chariton now says that he regrets calling for social media bans after “seeing Silicon Valley’s censorship onslaught.” https://www.rt.com/usa/514563-jordan-chariton-youtube-censorship/
