The fact that the House speakership is hotly contested, provides an opportunity for liberty-oriented GOP congressmen to successfully demand concessions, which would curb the spekers’ autocratic reign over the House of Representatives.
Kevin McCarthy, the GOP’s current candidate for House speaker, is strugggling to secure enough votes to be elected speaker, as several Republican House members have openly voiced their opposition to him becoming speaker. McCarthy is widely seen as a part of the establishment, which is in opposition to many Republicans’ desire for personal freedom, respect for constitutional rights, transparency and small government.
As a result, McCarthy had to make a number of concessions in hopes to secure more votes. Pleasantly however, Freedom Caucus members seem more interested in substantial rule changes than personal favors. Among their common sense demands are:
- Broader membership in the group that doles out committee assignments
- Allowing committee members to choose their own chairs
- Allowing amendments from the floor
- Being given five days to review legislation before voting on it.
If these demands were met, legislative power would be a bit more evenly distributed among our 435 Representatives again (like the Founding Fathers intended), rather than, as currently, being concentrated in the hands of one person (the speaker).
