Among the concessions, which the 20 Republican Representatives who initially voted against McCarthy as speaker wrestled from him in order to vote for him, are rule changes which should be common sense, but were considered revolutionary after the autocratic Pelosi-era. One of the most important ones is no more omnibus-bills. Bills now have to be about a single subject and members must be given at least 72 hours, before voting on them.
Previously, so-called omnibus bills often contained thousands of pages, rewriting countless titles of U.S code about subject matters that had no connection and congressmen had no opportunity to familiarize themselves with what all they were about to vote on.
The principledness of these 20 congressmen, including Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Andy Ogles (R-TN) is encouraging and deserves respect.
