HB1080 prohibits the castration and sterilization of minors, as well as certain other medically not warranted hormonal treatments and unnecessary amputations of minors.
The bill to protect children against these practices was passed with the Republican majority against the opposition of Democrats, who want to continue these procedures on minors. However, with HB 1080 signed by Governor Noem, performing these acts on minors is now illegal in South Dakota.
